Result 12 - Amani Botanical Garden rehabilitated for research, training and tourism purposes and centre for tropical forestry research and training developed at Amani.

12.1 Amani Botanical Garden (ABG) rehabilitated for research, training and tourism purposes in the area.
12.1.1 Follow-up will be made to clarify ownership of ABG and justify ownership and management of ABG under ANR in collaboration with relevant institution such as Tropical Pesticide Research Institute-Gene bank Section(TPRI), Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) by June 2000.
12.1.2 Strategic development plan for ABG will be finalised by the short term consultant (Kew) and a management plan for ABG will be developed accordingly; by January 2000.
12.1.3 The ABG management will effectively participate in International Correspondence in development issues of the Botanic Gardens; and send its staff in International Congress and conferences accordingly.

The ABG will ensure setting its Membership to Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI), and join the Southern Africa Botanic Network (SABONET) by January 2000. Follow up establishment of BOZONET, (Botany and zoology network for East Africa) through University of Dar Es Salaam will be done by January 2000, and ABG be included in the Usambara Website.

12.1.4 The Prepared Management Plan for ABG will be tested after approval by February 2000. The implementation will base on fund availability as stipulated in the plan.
12.2 Centre for Research and Training Developed
12.2.2 Training on tropical ecology in collaboration with other research organization and institution will be conducted at Amani by using existing EUCDP facilities. The organization like Tropical Biology Association (TBA), Institute of Terrestrial ecology - UK, Kew Botanic Garden (UK) will be involved in Training and Research.
12.2.3 Short term consultant on the relocation of NIMR from Amani to Muheza will be commissioned in January 2000; the constancy will give proposals and suggestion on how to go about the process.
