Result 5 - Systematic farm forestry programme developed including alternatives
to use forest resources and forest land.
| 5.1 |
Assess Local Needs and Interests |
| 5.1.1 |
Simple Participatory Rural Appraisal will be conducted to 13 buffer zone villages
to Manga and Mtai forest reserves for joint forest management by March 2000. This will create awareness, giving empowerment and the role in the management and wise utilisation of the resources. The villages to be included in the exercise are
Misozwe, Kwatango, Mkwajuni, Segoma for Manga Forest Reserve, and Churwa, Matemboni, Maramba A, Maramba B, Hemsambia, Vuga, Kidundui, Kwekuyu and Bosha Kwemtindi (Muzi) for Mtai Forest Reserve. |
| 5.2 |
Increased tree nurseries and tree planting |
| 5.2.1 |
Tree nurseries will be established and strengthened starting from August 1999, in buffer zone villages. Tree nurseries
will be established by individuals, women groups and various institutions e.g. schools, churches etc. More effort will be in the 30 pilot villages listed in appendix 1. |
| 5.2.2 |
Villages within the buffer zone will continue establishing tree nurseries and
planting trees in their farm land. It is anticipated to establish 200 individual and group tree nurseries in the EUCAMP area. The total number of 200,000 tree seedlings are expected to be raised in the nurseries by May 2000. |
| 5.2.3 |
Management of planted trees in the village farmland will be done e.g. tree weeding, pruning, thinning and watering where
necessary and thinning. The project will give technical assistance to these activities. |
| 5.2.4 |
The survival of trees planted in the farm land in Phase I and II will be assessed. The survival information from the
villages will be used to adjust some techniques in area with poor performance. |
| 5.3 |
More appropriate Farming practices (Agroforestry and Soil Conservation) |
| 5.3.1 |
In collaboration with Agricultural extension agents, demonstration plots will be established in selected pilot Primary Schools
and contact farmers who will be ready to adopt the intervention in their farmland; At least two demonstration plots will be established by June 2000 in each field station, making the total of 8 demo plots. |
| 5.3.2 |
Farmers who are active and willing to participate in conservation activities are going to be identified as contact
farmers in the pilot villages. However the exercise will be conducted in a way not to discourage other farmers to participate in the conservation issues. |
| 5.3.3 |
Selected contact farmers and environmental teachers from pilot primary schools will be trained on agroforestry and soil
conservation practices. |
| 5.3.4 |
Villages which are cultivating on steep slopes will be encouraged to practice contour measuring, construction and planting
along the contours to avoid soil erosion. Villages such as Ubiri, Kizara, Kisiwani Mwembeni and Vuga will be considered. The intervention is going to be imparted to the farmers within the context of
training of trainers programme. The centres for the training will be selected, preferably in some of the Primary Schools. |
| 5.4 |
Alternative options to forest resources developed and promoted |
| 5.4.1 |
The Project will evaluate possible alternative options to forest resources. This will include alternatives to construction
materials, energy sources for domestic cooking and warming and income generating activities such as vegetable gardening, Beekeeping, fish farming etc. Information obtained from the PRA conducted for ANR General
Management Plan will be used for the 16 buffer zone villages. |
| 5.4.2 |
To achieve this sub-result, the Project will look for and communicate with potential collaborators such as Tanzania Traditional
Energy Development and Environment Organization (TATEDO), Community Development Offices in
Muheza and Korogwe Districts and the like. |
| 5.4.3 |
The Project will ensure that the locally available resources will be used in attaining the desirable alternatives and assist
accordingly. The Project will support farmers in developing alternatives. |
| 5.5 |
Land alternatives available |
| 5.5.1 |
The land for tree planting especially for women groups is one of the bottleneck to their tree planting activities. The Project
will initiate discussions between the women groups with such problems and the Village Governments to look for the possibility of allocating land to the groups, or to pass the problem to the District Authorities. |
