East Usambara Catchment Forest Project - Work Plan 1999/2000

Administrative Report 25

Result 7 - Research relevant for forest conservation and management increased and dissemination of information improved.

7.1 Research encouraged on priority topics
7.1.1 Efforts will be made to identify research collaborators. A list of identified collaborators will be compiled by end of August 1999. The list will include both local researchers and potential collaborators from outside the country (refer Appendix 2).
7.1.2 Information on priority research topics will be disseminated to identified collaborators by September, 1999
7.1.3 Researchers who will be interested to conduct research studies among the priority research topics will be provided with logistical support. Logistical support may include use of e-mail, computers and occasional transport assistance.
7.1.4 Information gathered in research will be disseminated to other relevant institutions. Research findings will be used in forest management for example; biodiversity survey data to be used in the preparation of the forest management plans.
7.1.5 Data collection from hydrological and meteorological stations will continue in collaboration with related departments. Climatological stations will be inspected in collaboration with met. staff after every three months. Rehabilitation of equipment will be done whenever needs arises. Repainting of station fences and stevenson's screen will be effected by September 1999. Hydrological stations will be rehabilitated by October 1999 and data collection resumed.
7.2 Improved access to and dissemination of information
7.2.1 Cataloguing system and database information retrieval system will be introduced to the staff by September 1999.
7.2.2 A follow-up will be made for the biodiversity taxonomy data from U.K. The data will be entered into the database. New library entries will be classified, catalogued and entered into the library database. A follow-up will be made on required software/accessories in order to up-date project computers which were tested for year 2000 compliance by December 1999.
7.2.3 Relevant documentation will be procured and made available to the project staff .Procurement will be done when need arises.
7.2.4 The project will continue to disseminate various project information to different institutions and individuals e.g. TAFORI, FBD and Tanga library. Either newly received library publications like Trees of Amani, Misitu ni Uhai; newsletters, pamphlets or reprints will be distributed or displayed for reference - depending on quantity.
7.3 Biodiversity surveys
7.3.1 Biodiversity surveys will be conducted at Kwamkoro and Kwamsambia blocks. The work has already started on July and will continue till September 1999. These surveys will continue to other blocks in order to cover the whole of Amani Nature Reserve (ANR) and a single report covering all blocks i.e. ANR will finally be prepared.
7.3.2 The staff will be trained on the use of the biodiversity data base by December 1999
7.3.3 Efforts will be done to link biodiversity network to other related networks i.e. the National biodiversity database at the UDSM (Zoology Department) by June, 2000.
