Endemic and Near-Endemic Trees In the Usambara Mountains -
The near-endemic taxa are mainly of Afromontane or Zanzibar-Inhambane affinity. East Usambara has 466 such taxa, which is 22 % of the total vascular flora. For both blocks combined the endemic and near-endemic taxa account for 656 taxa (23 % of the total flora). Of these 195 are trees growing more than 5 m tall which is 29 % of this group (Iversen 1991). The aim of this brief paper is to list these endemic and near-endemic tree species so that foresters and others working with the conservation of the East Usambara forests will be familiar with the species.
