Tinga Tinga Art

Tinga tinga paintings have been named according to Edward Said Tinga tinga (1937-1972). Tinga tinga comes from Tanga region, Mindu village in Tunduru. He started painting when he was working on building sites. During the breaks he was painting animals and humans. Sometimes he was asked to paint local doctors' or small companies' advertisements on walls. Gradually more and more attention was paid to Tinga tinga's paintings in Dar es Salaam. He started to learn his relatives on his painting methods.

The East Usambara Catchment Forest Project invited five tingatinga painters to get acquainted with the Forests in the East Usambaras and to paint on their impressions. They all are the relatives of Edward Tinga tinga.
